How can I provide input to an `apify run` from the CLI?

I have my project checked out locally and am running

apify run

apify run

but it won't get the input since i didn't initiate the run via the apify console.

I see that i can provide the input as JSON when initiating via the API.

But how can I do so from the CLI?

I saw this thread here after a first search but it seems to be about the input schema rather than providing input:
start urls input

It looks like i'd have to create put the JSON file into -- is this really the only option?

The run gets input passed to it via the INPUT record of its default key-value store. In addition to this, environment variables are also passed to the run. You can find more information about environment variables in the Environment variables section.
